Gold Maple Leaf Design
The design of the gold Canadian Maple Leaf coin is its most recognizable feature. The front of the coin features Queen Elizabeth II, while the reverse displays an illustration of a Canadian Maple Leaf. The coin carries almost the same exact same design from year-to-year, dating back to when it was first introduced in 1979. Many coin collectors and enthusiasts prefer the Maple Leaf because over other coins because of the precision and detail in the design of the coin. It is truly one of the most high-quality and intricate gold coins in the world.
The Gold Canadian Maple Leaf was first minted in 1979 by the Royal Canadian Mint. Though it was pre-dated by a few coins like the South African Gold Krugerrand, the Maple Leaf is one of the older coins available today with a superior reputation. When it was first produced, the Maple Leaf was .999 pure. This would last until 1982 when it was improved to .9999 fineness.
The Gold Maple Leaf comes in a collection of different weights and sizes, ranging from 1/20th oz to 1 oz and even larger. One of the most interesting Gold Canadian Maple Leaf pieces of history was the introduction of 1/15th oz size coins that were only released in 1994. Due to a lack of demand for this new and innovative size, production of the 1/15th coins was discontinued that same year.
The Gold Canadian Maple Leaf has gained recognition with the increased alue of gold bullion. This is due to the fact that this coin has a greater amount of gold (.9999 vs .999 and lower) than many of its coin counterparts. Combine this with its appealing design and the Maple Leaf has become a gold owner’s favorite, in Canada, the United States, and around the world.
In 2007, the Royal Canadian Mint produced of a $1 million dollar coin, which gained worldwide attention. The million-dollar coin was designed by Stanley Witten, and as of today, only 5 have been produced. There have been many special releases of this coin over the years, but this was definitely one of its crowning achievements. Publicity led to even more widespread consumer demand from collectors, investors, and everyone in between. Today, these coins can be purchased for very fair premiums over the current spot gold price.
